Attendance Guidelines

San Diego County Office of Education feels that the youth are our future and they are our most precious resource. In order for each student to reach their full potential, education should be top priority. This focus begins at home and parents need to understand why it is important for their children to be at school, on time and throughout the entire scheduled school day. Because patterns begin early in life, beginning and staying on the positive path is a key to success.

* All persons between the ages of 6-18 are required by California law to attend school. Parents have a legal responsibility to ensure their child's attendance. (Ed Code Sec 48200)

* A student is considered truant is he/she is absent without a valid excuse 3 full days in one school year or tardy or absent for more than a 30 min period without a valid excuse on 3 occasions in 1 year, or combination of thereof (Ed Code Sec 48260)

* A student's refusal to attend school regularly can result in referral to the School Attendance Review Board (SARB), Juvenile Probation, and the Juvenile Court System (Ed Code Sec 48263)

* Parents who fail to compel their child's attendance may face criminal prosecution and penalties (Ed Code Sec 48291).
